The History of Flip Side Skatepark

In 2005 when Zero Gravity skatepark left its longtime home the Giorgetti Athletic Complex for their new residence at Whale Back Mountain in New Hampshire, it left local skaters at a loss. After much public outcry, meetings were held resulting in a committee made up of parents and skaters alike, with the goal of creating a new local skatepark. In 2006, Killington Ski Resort got the ball rolling with their donation of what few ramps they had. Additionally, the committee was able to raise $60,000 from local businesses and Rutland clubs. The Rutland Kiwanis Club alone donated $20,000 towards the creation of Flip Side. The next important piece of the puzzle was to find an experienced skatepark builder. Committee member, and local resident, Chris “The Master” Hurka landed the job. This was key. Not only had Chris been building skate ramps for years, but it was decided the park would be built on site, allowing for all the skaters to have input on what they wanted Chris to build. Flip Side would not be what it is today without this involvement from its skaters. After three years of building ramps, a new floor and new lighting, these grassroots efforts resulted in making Flip Side Vermont’s premiere indoor skatepark that you see today.
